Page, Alan and Kamie Page. Baking Up Love. Illustrated by David Geister. Minneapolis, MN: Page Education Foundation, 2025.

Summary

Imagine a recipe where the most important ingredient isn’t sugar or flour, but love. Baking Up Love (Page Education Foundation / January 1, 2025 / $18.99) by Alan and Kamie Page invites young readers into the kitchen, where a grandfather and granddaughter bond over baking cupcakes for a school celebration, using a secret ingredient taught by Grandma. Set against the backdrop of a school Literacy Feast, this heartfelt children’s story honors family traditions, blending joy, memory, and connection through a simple but powerful act: baking together.

Alan Page, NFL Hall of Famer and former Minnesota Supreme Court Justice, and Kamie Page, a dedicated fifth-grade teacher, offer young readers a unique blend of inspiration and diversity through Baking Up Love. This story not only entertains but also promotes essential values of literacy, representation, and community bonding. Proceeds from the book support the Page Education Foundation, a nonprofit founded by Alan and his late wife Diane, which provides scholarships and mentorship to young Minnesota students of color.

Ideal for children ages 4-8, parents, educators, and community advocates, Baking Up Love is a must-read that invites readers to celebrate family heritage and the love that lives on in cherished family traditions.

My Kid Review

Baking Up Love is a delightful picture book about the love between a grandfather and a granddaughter. The father-daughter team, Alan and Kamie Page, beautifully present the grandfather-granddaughter relationship through the text of this book.

Esther is supposed to provide cupcakes for her class’ Literacy Feast – but mom has to work late. Grandpa says he can help, but Esther is skeptical. Grandpa comes through, and they even add a secret ingredient to the recipe.

One of the book’s delights is the Page family recipe for Mississippi Mud cake or cupcakes.

David Geister created beautiful illustrations that complimented the text well.

Baking Up Love would be a great addition to the picture book section of a K-12 Christian school library. It is appropriate for all ages.

I received a complimentary copy of Baking Up Love. This is my honest review.
