My Kid Review

Linsey Davis and Michael Tyler have crafted a beautiful picture book about all the things girls can do.  The text is rhythmic and rhymes nicely. The text is somewhat generic – most of the story is told in the illustrations.

Lucy Fleming depicts girls of different color and different abilities. She also portrays a wide variety of occupations – many of which were traditionally considered “male” occupations.

One aspect of the book bothers me a bit.The text and illustrations of the book definitely portrays “girl power” – it is like they are talking about a world of girls only. I would rather have had the book talk about boys and girls being created equal in God’s eyes and that either sex can have the jobs they want. In a way boys are being put down, just by their omission from the text and most illustrations. I also wish that female role models had been included (as well as Biblical women). The book, to me, does not necessarily support Biblical values.

I’m not sure I would place Girls of the World in a K-12 Christian school library, but librarians may want to make the decision for themselves.

I received a complimentary copy of Girls of the World. This is my honest review.
