My Kid Review

Dixon, Amy and Rob. Penny Preaches. Illustrated by Jennifer Davison. Downers Grove, IL: IVP Kids, 2024.

Amy and Rob Dixon have written a picture book to affirm young girls who feel called to preach. Penny is a child who enjoys church and the sermons she hears. She feels God has given her something to say so she writes a sermon and shares it with her toys. When she decides to branch out and share it with her friends, they are less than enthused because their preachers are men. Penny is discouraged until her family visits a church that has a female preacher.

I realize that there are theological differences on this topic so I won’t give a blanket recommendation but if your K-12 Christian school supports women becoming preachers, this is a good book for your picture book section. The book is appropriate for preschool and early elementary children.
