My Kid Review

Prasad, Sunayna. The Frights of Fiji. 2018.
Alyssa McCarthy’s Magical Missions, book 1

I haven’t come across many fantasy books for older elementary readers so I was excited when I heard about this series. Prasad created likable characters and placed them in situations where they had to overcome challenges. Alyssa is an orphan who lives with her uncle and cousin Hailey. After her aunt’s death (prior to the start of the story), the uncle became controlling and overprotective – the girls are never left alone and not allowed to do many things their peers are allowed to do. Magic comes into the girls’ lives and with it some danger. Together they face the danger and learn to battle the magic. Unfortunately I was disappointed in the book. The story seemed boring,  to move slowly at times, and parts of the plot just didn’t make sense. The author also used what I consider excessive profanity. The name of God was used in the context of a swear word quite regularly (and unnecessarily).Because of the concerns mentioned above, I do not recommend this title for a K-12 Christian school library.I received a complimentary copy of The Frights of Fiji. This is my honest review.
