Alexander, Johnnie. Journey of the Heart. NP: Misty Willow Books, 2025.

Unseen Valor series

Summary

I love fiction that teaches me a little bit of history. Journey of the Heart shares a bit about the Erie Canal, the Fugitive Slave Law, and the unique story of Circleville, Ohio. Alexander has a way of telling a great story while sharing history with her readers. I appreciated the “Behind the Story” section at the end of the story.

Charity and her family are involved in the Underground Railroad. Her father is the post master so they live in the same building as the post office. They live in the town of Circleville, Ohio which had built in concentric circles, but the town fathers are trying to change things to be squares – which means remodeling many buildings.

Tavish has been hired by the company tasked with changing the town’s layout. He meets some resistance from Charity’s father.

While Journey of the Heart is an adult historical novel, there is nothing in the story to keep it from being added to a K-12 Christian school library. It is appropriate for high schoolers.

I received a complimentary copy of Journey of the Heart. This is my honest review.
