My Adult Review

Peterson, Tracie, Karen Witemeyer, and Misty M. Beller. On a Midnight Clear. Minneapolis, MN: Bethany House Publishers, 2025.

Christmas is coming and it’s time to start finding the Christmas stories you’ll read this year. On a Midnight Clear contains three wonderful Christmas stories written by three excellent authors of historical fiction.

The first story is The Shepherd’s Heart by Tracie Peterson. In this story that starts in Nebraska and ends in Wyoming in 1875, a woman is left at the altar on her wedding day. An older friend recommends she go to a childhood friend who has recently lost his wife, leaving him to raise two children alone. Angel does just that. Peterson weaves together an “can’t stop reading” story about how Angel and Vincent become reacquainted and how Angel helps the family heal after the death of their wife and mother.

Misty M. Beller’s story, No Room at the Inn, is the second story in the anthology. Set at a stage stop in what will become Wyoming, Martin and his sister Hope have Christmas guests in the middle of a blizzard. The stage driver is wounded so they cannot move on anyway. Time together grows a relationship between the siblings and their guests. With a common goal of solving a mystery and helping the stage driver heal, there is much to bond the young people. Beller has once again crafted an enjoyable story that tells a little bit of history in the process.

The final story, written by Karen Witemeyer, takes place in Texas in the late 1800’s. A Star in the West is a beautiful story which ends in the rescue of a young lady and her baby from life as a lady of the evening. It also includes a romance which tests Stella’s commitment to care for her widowed father.

All three of these novellas were enjoyable. I’d love to see full length novels about the characters.

While the stories in these anthologies are written for adults, there is nothing that would keep them from being added to a K-12 Christian school library. They are appropriate for high schoolers.

I received a complimentary copy of On a Midnight Clear. This is my honest review.
