Author Interview with Cari Webb
When did you first know you wanted to be an author?
That’s an interesting question. We are in the process of relocating to another state and I’ve been cleaning out our house. As it happens, I ran across some old pictures and paperwork stashed in the attic this past week. Inside one of the folders were stories I had written in high school for an English class. I was surprised to see that I was writing stories even back then – ones my teacher happened to really like. At that time, I considered myself a voracious reader, not a writer. It wasn’t until after I married that I ventured into writing my own stories. And it wasn’t until I shared my first full manuscript with my husband, that I even entertained the idea of becoming a published author. It was with my husband’s encouragement and my family’s that I started on the path to publication. It wasn’t an easy path, and it has been challenging, but I love writing romance books and it has been very rewarding.
When you are not writing, what other hats do you wear? What do you do for fun?
When I’m not writing and not wearing my mom hat, I can often be found reading or cooking. I love finding new recipes and testing them out on my family. I also enjoy baking. And right now, it is all things pumpkin and apple in our house.
What is your favorite genre to read? What about that genre draws you?
I read mostly romance. Within romance, I love a dark paranormal or a rich historical. I really enjoy getting lost in a well-drawn world with interesting characters on equally interesting journeys. There’s nothing like a happily-ever-after which comes after challenges and conflict that test the main characters and bring them even closer together. I’ve been drawn to romance since I picked up my first one back in high school. For me it’s about the journey the characters go on. I like getting to the end and feeling satisfied and inspired and happy – that keeps me reaching for another romance to dive into.
What is your favorite thing about this time of year?
All the wonderful flavors and scents that come from the desserts and seasonal foods which I like to make. I also like getting together with my family and friends this time of year and sharing good food and laughter. It’s the best time to build new memories with the people I care about.
What historical figure do you admire and why?
Florence Nightingale. I recall doing a report on her when I was in school. My mom is a retired RN and nurses hold a special place in my heart. Florence Nightingale is credited with being the founder of nursing. What she accomplished in her life and the legacy she left behind is very inspiring. She followed her own beliefs and dreams rather than what her parents wanted for her. And in the process, she changed the medical community and how patients are cared for in hospitals.
How does your faith play out in your writing?
I have a collection of angels that sit on the shelves right above my computer. There isn’t a day I don’t look at those angels when I sit at my desk and ask for their help with my writing. Writing a book takes a team effort and my faith is a part of that process.
As a former K-12 school librarian (and since this blog is geared toward school librarians) I have to ask – what is your favorite children’s book?
Where do I start? The Secret Garden came to mind immediately. Followed quickly by Little Women and A Wrinkle in Time. But I can’t forget The Giving Tree. And then anything by Dr. Seuss and Judy Blume. I could go on, but I’ll stop there.
Young Author’s Days were an important part of my work as a school librarian. What advice would you give to a child or teen who wants to be a writer?
My advice is to believe in yourself, in the stories you want to tell and be persistent. For a young child, I would tell them to let their imagination go and envision the story they want to tell – the one that makes them happy. Because at the end of the day, there should be joy in writing, even during the times when the words are hard to find, the writing should bring you joy.
Thanks so much for joining me today. I appreciate you taking time to share about yourself for my readers.
