Meet the Author – Daisy Butterfield

I was born in a small New England town. Growing up I lived just two houses away from my grandparents, and spent countless days hanging out with Grammie and Pupa playing games and gardening. I loved flowers, and still do. I would roam the fields picking wild Lupine, Queen Anne’s Lace, and, of course, Daisies. This book is a legacy to my grandparents, a way of saying thank you for the sweet memories. May you make sweet memories with your little ones as you read this book with them.

Author Interview – Daisy Butterfield

When did you first know you wanted to be an author?

I wanted to write ever since I was a little girl.  Creativity was always bubbling up inside me, and I wanted to share my thoughts with the world.  I found the best way to express myself was through writing.  Words expressed through voice drift off into the air, but words on a page will always be there.

When you are not writing, what other hats do you wear? What do you do for fun?

I am currently a substitute teacher for grades 1 through 5.

For fun I started taking drum lessons a little over two years ago.  It’s loud, but it’s lots of fun, especially when my drumstick slips out of my hand in the middle of a song and does a backwards somersault through the air.  I also like to walk and listen to nature sing.

What is your favorite genre to read? What about that genre draws you?

I enjoy reading self-improvement books – I love to learn something new.  Maybe it’s a better way to plant a garden, or clean the house, or better yet, make homemade ice cream.

What is your vacation destination? Why?

My vacation destination is a lawn chair at the beach.  I love listening to the waves crash on the shore and the sounds of the seagulls flying overhead.  It gives me a chance to relax and unwind.  I enjoy wading in the tide pools watching the hermit crabs play among the rocks.

Who did you have in mind as you wrote the book?

My grandparents and me.  They really did live two doors from me, and their land was full of buttercups growing in the front yard and wild daisies in the fields.  I learned so many things from them, and they made me feel very loved.  So, I wanted to leave a legacy for them to say “Thank You.”

As a former K-12 school librarian I have to ask – what is your favorite children’s book?

My favorite children’s book is Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss.  I remember the bright orange cover and all the words that rhymed.  It taught me how to read in a fun way.  My favorite color when I was little was green, so I liked the green eggs.

Cool! Green Eggs and Ham was my favorite as a child as well.

What advice would you give to a child or teen who wants to be a writer?

Start by writing about what you know.  Maybe it’s about your time at summer camp, or how you felt being the new kid in school . . . Let the words flow onto the page without stopping, then go back and re-read it and make your edits.  There will always be someone who needs to hear what you have to say, and how will they hear it if you don’t write it!

Thank you so much for joining me today. It is always fun to find commonalities with the authors I interview.
