Author Interview with Dana R. Lynn
Today, I am sharing an interview with Dana Lynn.
When did you first know you wanted to be an author? I first knew I wanted to be an author in 5th or 6th grade. I had recently completed The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. When I read her biography, I was amazed to learn she’d written the book at the age of 17. I decided I wanted to do the same. Well, I obviously didn’t write a book by 17, but the dream remained.
When you are not writing, what other hats do you wear? What do you do for fun? I am also a wife, mother of three, and a full-time teacher for the deaf and hard of hearing. Those keep me pretty busy! When I have free time, I enjoy reading, walking, music, and going out for coffee with friends and family.
What is your favorite genre to read? What about that genre draws you? This is a really hard question for me to answer because I enjoy so many genres. I obviously love romantic suspense. I enjoy books that keep me on the edge of my seat. But I also am a huge fan of historical romance, particularly Regency, and contemporary romance. In addition, I read mystery, science fiction, thriller and the occasional young adult books.
What is your favorite thing about this time of year? Rural northwestern PA is gorgeous at this time of year. I love spending time outside enjoying the weather. I will often write or read outside. I also love the suddenness of the changes. One minute, I’m enjoying a breezy warm afternoon, the next I’m hearing thunder. I find it exciting.
What historical figure do you admire and why? Jesus is my number one choice. No one changed the world and gave us hope like He did. Outside of the Bible, I admire Helen Keller, among many others. As a teacher of the deaf, I see daily the effect hearing loss has on language development and communication. Helen overcame her dual sensory impairment and became an author, a speaker and an advocate.
How does your faith play out in your writing? In every book I write, my theme is that God is bigger than any problems we encounter. I believe God has a specific reason for each book I write, and that He has specific readers whom He has a message for. However, I don’t like preaching. I want the reader to see the faith in action.
As a former K-12 school librarian I have to ask – what is your favorite children’s book? My favorite children’s book ever is The Forgotten Door by Alexander Key. I read that in 6th grade, and still own a copy.
What advice would you give to a child or teen who wants to be a writer? I would tell them to study the craft and learn to be the best writers they can be. I am still learning after all these years. The second piece of advice I would give them is to not give up. Yes, they will need another career while pursuing writing. That’s fine. I know many bestselling authors who pursued writing for years until they were awarded that first contract. That is fine. If writing is your call, be faithful to it. Write a little every day, learn, and keep praying for inspiration and direction.
Dana, thanks so much for joining us today. My readers and I enjoy learning more about authors.
