Series: The Hilton Legacy

Summary of Like a Ship on the Sea

If God asks you to confront a storm, how dare you stay in the harbor?

Lady Mary Cassidy O’Connell has a dream that can be summed up in three connecting ideas: a loving husband, adorable children, and a home of her own. Her mother’s lack of care makes life difficult for Cassie, and an escape is necessary. The plan? Marry Aubrey Montgomery, the man her parents have chosen for her, and find the peace she craves.

Unfortunately, Cassie is uneasy about marrying Aubrey. Her apprehension grows as she witnesses her dearest friend’s loving marriage take place. At this wedding, she catches the eye of Patrick Hilton, son of a wealthy American. Like Cassie, he’s also set to marry a woman chosen by his parents—only, Patrick claims, he is content with this choice.

Torn between her desire for happiness and the knowledge that God is leading her in a different direction, Cassie confronts the impossible decision. Is a loveless marriage of obligation better than being alone, or will she set sail on a voyage without a safe harbor?

Like a Ship on the Sea is the first novel in The Hilton Legacy, a stand-alone trilogy featuring characters from the author’s first series, The Chronicles of Alice and Ivy.

Author Interview – Kellyn Roth

Kellyn, it’s been a while see I interviewed you. Thanks for joining me again today on my blog.

When did you first know you wanted to be an author?

I talked about it on and off from the time I was seven, but I really made the decision at eleven or so when I started sharing my writing more regularly with my friends. They liked it (bad as it was back then!) and that gave me the courage to pursue it seriously.

When you are not writing, what other hats do you wear? What do you do for fun?

I work at the Author Conservatory as an admin assistant and for their sister program, The Young Writer, as an admissions counselor … and I’m also the personal support worker (nanny/prek teacher) for a young man with Down Syndrome. For fun, I enjoy spending time with friends, the occasional hike, trying to keep my border collie out of trouble, and trying to convince people that my obsession with Keira Knightley is not as out of control as you might think.

What is your favorite genre to read? What about that genre draws you?

I’m primarily a historical romance author, and the truth is, I like it because I’ve always been wildly curious about relationships, and how they work, and the genre provides a slower-paced, interesting look at relationships. I find that a lot of historical romance authors take time to develop their characters, as much because they can’t use shorthands that are easy to identify to modern audiences, such as some popular culture events that tie us together. Further, it’s a little escapism … but not too much escapism. Oh, and did I mention that I’m obsessed with historical culture? Not so much the historical events, though I know a fair share about that, but the actual people and how they thought and lived! To me, that’s fascinating.

What is your favorite thing about this time of year?

September? The fact that Christmas is only a few months away. I’m not an autumn person (I’m a summer girl), but it does mean December is just around the corner!

What historical figure do you admire and why?

Abraham Lincoln! He’s such a wise, careful man who was a brilliant politician and speaker. In some ways, he reminds me of my granddad.

How does your faith play out in your writing?

In the characters, mostly! I enjoy writing characters who are struggling with topics close to my heart – or close to the hearts of people I know. I try to focus on that over written sermons, though I admit some of my characters like to GIVE sermons, which puts me in a tricky place!

As a former K-12 school librarian (and since this blog is geared toward school librarians) I have to ask – what is your favorite children’s book?

I had so many! I think one that really sticks out to me is Henry and the Clubhouse by Beverly Cleary. For some reason, this one kept drawing me back. Maybe because I had a clubhouse myself!

Young Author’s Days were an important part of my work as a school librarian. What advice would you give to a child or teen who wants to be a writer?

Just keep writing! Finish a novel. Finish several! And get feedback on it, yes, but the most important thing you can do is just continuing to write.
