My Author Interview with Kirthana Fanning

  1. When did you first know you wanted to be an author?

I’ve always had a passion for storytelling. Even as a child, you would often find me in small gatherings with my friends, sharing stories and entertaining. This love for creating content never left me; I just continued to use it on a different platform as a TV producer. However, something remarkable happened in my mid-20s. While I was in prayer, God revealed to me that I was meant to be a children’s author. At that moment, I had no idea of the profound calling He had in store for me.

As I embarked on this new journey, I began by writing a few stories as a practice run. These stories were mainstream and not necessarily Christian-based, and I didn’t publish them. But in March of 2023, the Lord revealed to me that I was meant to be a Christian children’s author, and my path became clearer than ever before.

  1. When you are not writing, what other hats do you wear? What do you do for fun?

When I’m not busy getting tangled in the labyrinth of words, you’ll frequently find me rocking a chef’s hat. My husband is like my personal foodie hype squad, always ready to devour my delicious masterpieces. Ah, and let’s not overlook my dynamic duo of Siberian huskies, the tireless energy generators that make our humble abode feel like a perpetual amusement park!

I must confess, I fancy myself quite the game aficionado, and Pictionary never fails to tickle my funny bone, despite my less-than-stellar artistic abilities. I love to read, and it keeps me inspired. I also like conjuring up swag for my literary work, embarking on daring DIY escapades at home, and exploring trails through the great outdoors.

When it comes to TV, I’m all about those wholesome family shows that make you feel warm and fuzzy inside. And of course, I’m always up for intellectual stimulation too—anything that expands my mind and helps me grow as a person.

My Saturday mornings are busy as I volunteer as a youth fellowship leader for over 200 aspiring medical professionals. But above all, I love to spend time with Jesus.

  1. What is your favorite vacation? And why?

I’ve had the privilege of exploring many countries, but Greece holds a special place in my heart for several reasons. First and foremost, I absolutely adore the food. Greek cuisine is a delightful mix of fresh ingredients, Mediterranean flavors, and culinary traditions that have been passed down through generations.

Beyond the cuisine, it’s the people of Greece who have left an indelible mark on my heart. The warm hospitality and genuine friendliness of the Greeks create an atmosphere of welcoming warmth that makes you feel like family wherever you go. Their zest for life and love of sharing their culture with visitors are truly heartwarming.

And then there’s the sheer beauty of Greece’s landscapes and architecture, from the stunning blue waters of the Aegean Sea to the iconic white-washed buildings of Santorini. The rich history and ancient ruins add an extra layer of fascination to this captivating country.

But hey, I haven’t  yet seen Hawaii, Italy, and Bora Bora!

  1. What historical figure do you admire and why?

While we could discuss historical figures from around the world, I’d like to focus on a remarkable historical figure from the Bible who has always inspired me: Queen Esther. I greatly admire her unwavering faith in God, her incredible determination, and her selflessness in risking her life to stand up for her people, even when it meant facing potential death. Esther’s humility and courage serve as a timeless example of moral strength and leadership.

  1. What advice would you give to a child or teen who wants to be a writer?

My advice is: First and foremost, remember to tune in to the big man upstairs, Jesus. Find His plan for your life, because when you’re on that path, everything starts falling into place like a perfectly crafted story.

Secondly, I encourage you to use words that don’t just sit on the page like lazy couch potatoes. Pen down stories that lift others up, sprinkle motivation like confetti, and whisk up adventures that stir the soul. Make your stories a feast for the heart and a journey for the mind. Tales that edify a Christian soul!

And thirdly, be ready to work hard and keep pushing forward. You will be rewarded!

In my opinion, the recipe for becoming a writer who leaves an indelible mark on the world is God’s plan and the three P’s: purposeful prose, patience, and unwavering perseverance.

Note from the Author: I humbly and hopefully ask all you kind-hearted souls to lend your support to my Kickstarter campaign for ‘The Girl and Her Noble Steed.’ Your contribution, no matter how big or small, will make a significant impact in getting this book out there and bringing its future series to life. Together, we can make sure this award-winning, heartwarming story reaches children, filling their lives with Christian faith-based, uplifting tales. Thank you for planting a seed of love in my journey and being part of this incredible adventure!

More from Kirthana Fanning

Reflecting on a significant milestone in my life, one I deeply cherish, I can’t help but think about the journey I’ve traveled. It all started in the shadows of fear, discouragement, and neglect during my childhood. However, it was the profound influence of God’s word, the power of prayer, and the unwavering support system that surrounded me that illuminated my path in countless ways.

For 13 years, I grappled with consistency and security in my previous job as a TV producer and content head. I felt a void in my life, a sense that something was missing. So, I turned to prayer and patiently waited for God to reveal His will for me. And He did just that, leading me to become a children’s author dedicated to writing Christian faith-based books that encourage and inspire young hearts, guiding them closer to Christ.

“The Girl and Her Noble Steed” emerged from my desire to create a book brimming with adventure and faith. Through this book, I hope to teach children that a miracle is just a prayer away and that nothing is impossible for those who love and believe in God. This knowledge was not readily available to me while I was growing up, and I don’t want any child to miss out on a relationship with Jesus.

Now, let me share a fun fact about the book. Just like the quirky words that fill the pages of “The Girl and Her Noble Steed,” I too have a penchant for using quirky words in my everyday life. It’s a small touch of my personality that adds an extra layer of charm to the stories I write.

So, what’s my goal? It’s simple. I aim to bring smiles to children’s faces while sowing the seeds of wonder and wisdom in their minds. Why, you may wonder? Once upon a time, I was a wide-eyed dreamer navigating the complexities of growing up. But then Jesus found me, and in His love, I discovered peace and comfort. Now, I’m on a mission to remind kids that they are truly amazing. I want every child to understand that they are special and important and that God’s love for them is boundless.

This is just the first book in a series, and I plan to release Book 2 just in time for Easter, continuing the journey of faith and inspiration for young readers.
