Never Hire a Hero

Three children and a marriage of convenience may be his biggest challenge yet

A former elite soldier, Stephen Roth was trained to be ruthless as he served as bodyguard for kings and princes. So why would his English patroness, Lady Belfort, and her cat, Fortune, arrange for him to take a position as the tutor to the heir of Alldene Castle and the boy’s siblings? And why does the children’s mother, Lady Alldene, look at him with shining eyes, as if he could be some sort of hero? This was not the sort of challenge he bargained for!

A peer in her own right, Thea, Countess of Alldene, was raised in Alldene Castle and taught how to rule over it. But nothing prepared her for the death of her husband and the villainy of the man he appointed as guardian for her children. If a tutor with a razor-sharp gaze will prevent that man from taking her sons away from her, she’s willing to put up with Roth’s rough-shod ways.

But the castle holds a secret that may prove Thea’s undoing. When danger threatens, she turns to the one man who might be able to keep them all safe. Could a marriage of convenience over Christmas prove that heroes can turn up in the least likely places?

If you like warm, witty historical romances, with a touch of mystery, then you’ll love this historical romance by an award-winning, bestselling author.

About the Author – Regina Scott

Regina Scott

Regina Scott started writing novels in the third grade. Thankfully for literature as we know it, she didn’t actually sell her first novel until she had learned a bit more about writing. Since her first novel was published, her stories have traveled the globe, with translations in many languages including Dutch, German, Italian, and Portuguese. She now has now published more than 65 works of warm, witty romance and more than 1 million copies of her books are in reader hands. She and her husband of 30 years reside in Washington State on the way to Mt. Rainier. Regina Scott has learned to fence, dressed as a Regency dandy, driven four in hand, and sailed on a tall ship, all in the name of research, of course.

An Author Interview with Regina Scott

When did you first know you wanted to be an author?

About third grade. That’s when I discovered that these wonderful books I was reading were written by someone, and I wanted to be that someone.

When you are not writing, what other hats do you wear? What do you do for fun?

I used to be a technical writer and researcher, so sometimes I help organizations with such things. But my favorite hat is “Nana” to my grandson. For fun, I take walks in nature with family or friends, visit historical sites and museums, and read, read, read!

What is your favorite genre to read? What about that genre draws you?

What a tough question! Historical romance, of course, but also historical mystery and steampunk. And I also love a romantic fantasy with lots of worldbuilding. Across all those genres, there’s a strong sense of place and time, and people working out their futures within it.

What is your favorite thing about this time of year?

Anticipating the coming of the Baby at Christmas and all the ways I will show my family and friends how much I love and appreciate them. I try to show them all year long, but Christmas is one of the few times we are all together anymore. That makes it doubly special!

What historical figure do you admire and why?

Another toughy! I admire Sophie Blanchard, who was a French aeronaut and the head of Napoleon’s Air Force (no kidding!). She did things even when they terrified her. Closer to home, I admire Ezra Meeker, a local pioneer who made it his life’s work to ensure we never forget the Oregon Trail. He had so many difficulties during his colorful life, but he always rose from the ashes.

How does your faith play out in your writing?

All my books have a Christian world-view because that’s how I think. Many of my stories include characters who are wrestling with faith issues, even if they don’t realize it at first. 😊

As a former K-12 school librarian (and since this blog is geared toward school librarians) I have to ask – what is your favorite children’s book?

The Prydain Chronicles by Lloyd Alexander. Those wonderful epic fantasies (with a slow-burn romance) were one of the reasons I wanted to become a writer. I hope my characters come even a little close to being as real as his.

Young Author’s Days were an important part of my work as a school librarian. What advice would you give to a child or teen who wants to be a writer?

Read, read, read! Read to “hear” how a story is put together, until you can feel the cadence in your bones. Read to broaden your vocabulary. Read to see how characters come alive. Even read to know what you don’t like in a story. (For me, multiple points of view in one paragraph—shudder!) And always remember that while someone might tell a story like yours, only you can tell your stories your way.

Regina, thanks so much for joining me today. My readers and I always enjoy learning more about authors.
