Author Interview – Sari Karplus
When did you first know you wanted to be an author?
Funny enough, I never intentionally set out to become an author. I had been a screenwriter, comic, and filmmaker for years, so storytelling was not new to me. But writing a book, let alone a children’s book, seemed just outside of my wheelhouse! The idea struck me for my first picture book from an improvised bedtime story that I told my own kids. The concept kept nagging at me to bring it to life somehow. With a strong beginner’s mindset, I started creating my first book in 2020, and it was released by Christmas. And now with my fourth book out, I still have to pinch myself that I get to proudly wear the author title.
When you are not writing, what other hats do you wear? What do you do for fun?
When I’m not writing, I’m momming my three kids, building websites, and doing standup comedy. Or when I don’t have energy for those things, I can be found chilling in the divet of my couch streaming the funniest thing I can find.
What is your favorite genre to read? What about that genre draws you?
I love reading self-help books because it’s a lot cheaper than hiring a life coach.
What is your vacation destination? Why?
Pretty much any beach destination is a-ok by me. I grew up in the landlocked midwest, so even though I’ve lived 30 minutes from beaches in Southern California for the past 20+ years, the beach will still always feel like vacation.
Who did you have in mind as you wrote the book?
I wrote this book to speak to all my creative, silly spirit animals out there of all ages.
As a former K-12 school librarian I have to ask – what is your favorite children’s book?
I Wish That I Had Duck Feet by Theo LeSieg aka Dr. Seuss. The rhyme scheme is super fun, and the story arc is second to none.
Oooh, I love that book.
What advice would you give to a child or teen who wants to be a writer?
Never let the speedbumps of the writing or publishing process hold you back. If you have a story to tell, by jove, you should get that story out of that beautiful brain and onto the page.
Thank you so much for joining me on my blog today. My readers and I enjoy getting to know authors.
