A child wants to assert independence very early on, and it’s important to allow them some freedom.

So while the child won’t decide on their own on a topic like what preschool they will attend, they can decide what to wear today.

Usually the best way to do that is to narrow their choices, then let them decide. For example, two choices: A or B. You can take other choices off the table: “That’s not a choice.” In some situations, you can be open to a child’s creativity on decisions.

Bad decisions should have low consequence and help learning. For example, the child generally can’t make decisions that risk an injury any worse than an owie. Some bad decisions may mean that a mess results; determine your own comfort level with messes and let those happen.

I remember a time when I briefly left our two preschool boys to their own designs. It happened at church on an Easter Sunday. Sara was singing in the choir, and I was sitting in one of the front rows with the boys. The congregation was invited to come into the choir loft to sing the “Hallelujah Chorus.” This is something I always enjoyed, and I wanted to do it.
