Wonderfully, Marvelously Brown, follows a young boy on a joyously affirming adventure that celebrates all shades of brown, from the darkest to the lightest.
From new school desks to freckles and moles, from fresh pastries to cedar canoes, brown is everywhere around us. God created and used brown to color the giant California redwoods, the Grand Canyon walls, busy beavers building dams, great horned owls hoo-hooing, and his image-bearers.
Everywhere that I go
I’m searching to see
something wonderfully, marvelously
brown—just like you and like me!
Illustrated by Pura Belpré Honor Award artist Sara Palacios and written by Xochitl Dixon, Wonderfully, Marvelously Brown takes kids on a tour of the U.S. to seek and find all the brilliant and beautiful shades of brown—from ivory to ebony—that God created. Readers will be encouraged to love the skin tone God chose for them as they observe how the spectacular shades of brown are reflected in their communities and the world around them.
Author Q & A
3. You have stated that the main character’s family is a celebration of God’s intentional diversity within the Latin cultures. However, you have also said that the family could represent a mixed couple with biracial children, a family with adopted or foster children, or a blended family. Why did you ask for the family to be represented in this way?
This is the beauty of God’s intentional diversity in creating families. We are a mixed couple with a biracial son (Black and Mexican). My stepson is adopted in my heart. He adopted his three older girls, so we are also a blended family and a family with adopted children. Though we don’t have foster children, God has given me a heart to love and include foster children.
I wanted the family in Wonderfully, Marvelously Brown to be a celebration of the diversity within the Latino culture first. However, I also wanted readers to see themselves within the beautiful diversity of the Latino culture. I also wanted to honor the multi-ethnic and multi-cultural family on my side and my husband’s side. So, I sent the publisher photos of our different family members, notes, and prayed.
