My Kid Review

Proia, Lorena M. How to Make a Sandwich. Somerville, MA: PnM Publishing, 2024.

You’d think from the title that this book is about making a sandwich and it is in a way. Yet it goes deeper than that. Through the eyes of Rae, a sandwich is compared to a family.

-Bread is like parents – keeping you safe.

-Turkey is like love.

-Lettuce is the fun in a family.

-Cheese is like kids – they make things interesting.

While making the sandwich, Rae runs into some challenges – pets and parents eating some of her ingredients.

How to Make a Sandwich could be used as a sample when teaching kids to write their own books. They could come up with another common item and compare it to another common item.

Lorena Proia did an excellent job with both the text and pictures. I look forward to reading more of her work.

How to Make a Sandwich would be a fun addition to the picture book section of a K-12 Christian school library.

I received a complimentary copy of How to Make a Sandwich. This is my honest review.

Meet the Author – Lorena M. Proia:

When Lorena graduated years ago with a BFA in Graphic Design and Painting, she never imagined she’d become an Information Architect in high-tech. She thought her creativity was lost until she was rescued by an Australian Shepherd named Phebe. Inspired by Phebe’s antics, Lorena started drawing again, leading to the creation of Phebe-n-Me, a t-shirt company that eventually blossomed into a children’s book!
