Summary

Meet Sydney, a girl who likes the same things other kids do-riding her bike, playing baseball, and hanging out with her friends. Sydney also has cerebral palsy, which makes walking, talking, and using her hands difficult.

Sydney shares her first hand account of life with cerebral palsy in I Have Cerebral Palsy so that others can understand what her life is like. Most importantly, Sydney wants her story to help other kids feel more comfortable around people with disabilities.

Readers can learn about the different items that make it easier for Sydney to be mobile, eat, or write in the fact-filled section about adaptive technology. Information about the Miracle League, the volunteer-based program that makes it possible for children with a variety of disabilities to play baseball is also included.

Additional resources are available to learn more about cerebral palsy and organizations that help children with disabilities and their families lead active lives.

My Kid Review

I firmly believe that all children should be able to “see themselves” in the pages of a book. That’s why I was happy to be able to review I Have Cerebral Palsy. Mary Beth Springer helped Sydney tell her story of what life with cerebral palsy is like. The explanations are wonderful and will help children understand what life is like. This would be a great classroom read aloud when a member of the class has cerebral palsy. 

The book is illustrated with beautiful photographs of Sydney’s life making, the book even more realistic for young children. 

I would not hesitate to add I Have Cerebral Palsy to the picture book (or biography or other nonfiction) section of a k-12 Christian school library. The book is appropriate for early elementary students.
