Mommy Otter has been busy caring for patients at the hospital, but now she’s home, ready for hugs, stories, and one very curious little otter.
Mommy’s shift may be over, but her most important job has just begun!
Enjoy this paperback version of the book. This book honors the resilience and special bond between parents working in the medical field and their children. It offers a space for comfort, laughter, and connection for little ones learning that love doesn’t sign off.
I love the concept of this book – a working parent returning home at the end of a long day. Dr. Moscoso seems to understand what is involved in being a working parent.
One thing I did not love about the book was an abrupt change in both point-of-view and writing style midway through the book. The book starts out with a back and forth dialogue between mommy and child with mommy caring most of the dialogue – telling about her day (much of it in terms that young children probably won’t understand). The dialogue does not have any cues as to who is speaking. Then the story abruptly shifts to the child telling the story and the dialogue is gone. Another thing I’m not sure about is the fact that the type is cursive. The book is written for preschoolers and the best type for helping this age-group with pre-reading skills is a print typeface.
The illustrations are cartoon-like. Some of the sequencing of illustrations doesn’t make sense to me. In the middle of the opening dialogue, the illustrations go from the child running to mommy, then being in bed to the child playing all while mommy is telling the child what happened during their day. Dr. Cevallos used calming pastel colors to illustrate the story and chose animals rather than humans to represent the characters.
Because of the reasons mentioned above, I’m not sure I would place the book in a K-12 Christian school library. However, there is nothing in the text or illustrations that would prevent it from happening.
I received a complimentary copy of Mommy is Here! This is my honest review.
Edison J. Cano Cevallos is a physician and father whose greatest joy comes from the moments of connection he shares with his family after long days at the hospital. Inspired by those tender reunions, he writes stories that reflect the resilience of medical families and the unbreakable bond between parent and child.
