In the Frozen Frogg Ice Cream Store, Bully Vanilli is the most popular ice cream and self-proclaimed king of the flavors. Lonely Mustachio sits at the back of the freezer. No one ever picks him. Every night, after the store door is locked, Bully Vanilli begins his bullying and Mustachio is his favorite target. One night, Vully kicks Mustachio’s bucket. Poor Mustachio falls SPLAT on the floor, and it’s… War at the Ice Cream Store! (And there’s a song!)
My Kid Review
DeVeiga, Cheryl and Dave Gibson. Mustachio Pistachio vs Bully Vanilli. Illustrated by Nate Fakes. NP: Waterhole Productions, 2025.
War at the Ice Cream Store series
DeVeiga and Gibson are masters at word play and puns. Some of this may be lost on younger children, but the adults reading the books to them will “get it.” I appreciated the fun ice cream facts the authors included at the end of the story.
The underlying theme of Mustachio Pistachio vs Bully Vanilli is about working together despite differences and standing up to bullies. Readers will feel what it feels like to be bullied and what it feels like to have friends come to your aid.
The cartoon-like illustrations of Nate Fakes will appeal to the children. The book is designed so that in many cases words are illustrations themselves.
Mustachio Pistachio vs Bully Vanilli would be a good addition to the picture book section of a K-12 Christian school library. It is appropriate for preschool to early elementary children.
I received a complimentary copy of Mustachio Pistachio vs Bully Vanilli. This is my honest review.
