Summary

Phooey Kerflooey is afraid of the dark. At Camp Castle Pine, the lights go off with the generator and the world is blanketed in darkness. After her boys read a Bible story about Pharaoh, some plagues, and The Destroyer (who seems a lot like the Angel of Death) Phooey is horrified. This Bible story is much too scary! Things are bad enough when the dark only happens after everyone goes to bed. But the camp’s generator breaks, and the darkness stays all night long. This is darkness that “can be felt,” just like in the Bible! When a frog hops on her tail and a grasshopper jumps on her head, Phooey is sure the plagues are coming again! The Angel of Death has killed the generator and now he’s coming for Phooey and her boys! Phooey Kerflooey must battle Pharaoh’s Evil Electrician and fix the generator herself, before it’s too late!

Theme verse: John 8:12—Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.” (NLT)

My Kid Review

On the surface the Phooey Tales books are about a dog, her boys, and their best friend. Phooey Kerflooey vs. The Deep, Deep Dark goes beyond this surface story and includes a retelling of the story of the Ten Plagues.

It was interesting to see how Wilks had Phooey apply the story to everyday life. A toddler or preschooler could apply the story in a similar way I suppose. Various events occur at the camp where Phooey and her family live that Phooey makes a humorous story application to – the generator not working is the plague of darkness, the electrician who comes to fix the generator is the evil Pharoah. Phooey tries to save her boys and “fix” the darkness but ends up only making things worse.

Readers will enjoy the silly antics of Phooey.

Phooey Kerflooey vs. The Deep, Deep Dark would make a great addition to the chapter book section of a K-12 Christian school library. It is appropriate for elementary-aged children.

I recieved a complimentary copy of Phooey Kerflooey vs. The Deep, Deep Dark. This is my honest review.
