My Kid Review

When I first started this book I wasn’t sure I was going to like it. But the more I read the more I liked the story. Fanning has fun with language – somewhat like Dr. Seuss did in his children’s books. The story is one that kids will relate to – overcoming adversity and having compassion for others. I really appreciated how Scripture and Biblical values were incorporated into the story. Ofe often stops to pray as she seeks to overcome the challenges in her life. 

I had a couple minor concerns about the book. The main character is the only child that is named. The rest are all referred to by descriptive terms. The other was a misapplication of Philippians 4:13. Many misapply this Scripture, but it  is referring to being content in all things (see the verses immediately preceding this) not running races or any other application people use it for. Neither of these concerns would keep me from sharing this book with a child.

While not a picture book, there are illustrations throughout the book. Travis Hill’s illustrations kind of have an island feel to them. They compliment the text.

The Girl and Her Noble Steed would be a good addition to a K-12 Christian school library. It is appropriate for mid- to upper-elementary kiddos.
