My Kid Review
Moore, Maria Castellucci. Vivienne in Paris. Illustrated by Emanuela Mannello. Herndon, VA: Mascot Books, 2023.
There is a lot being taught right now about mindfulness but have you ever wondered how to teach mindfulness to a child? Maria Castellucci Moore has written a delightful story that does just that. Vivienne in Paris would be a great teaching tool to model the practice of mindfulness for an elementary child (or an older one).
The assignment that Vivienne gets from her grandfather to pay attention to how she feels at her favorite places is one any child could complete. Vivienne in Paris would be a great story to read on a Friday afternoon in a classroom. The teacher could then give the students the same assignment grandfather gave to Vivienne. It would make a great discussion starter for a Monday morning. It could also be done over a shorter period – read the book before lunch with the assignment to do some of their favorite recess things during lunch recess and then discuss it after lunch. Parents could also use the book to teach mindfulness to their children.
Emanuela Mannello’s illustrations complement the story well. Vivienne in Paris is more of a picture storybook than a storybook as the text drives the story rather than the illustrations. There is also more text than your typical picture book.
Vivienne in Paris is appropriate for the picture book section of a K-12 Christian school library. It could be used with any elementary-aged child and even some younger middle school students as a mindfulness example.
I received a complimentary copy of Vivienne in Paris. This is my honest review.
