Excerpt
Excerpt 3
[Sabina] set a palm in front of her and whispered, “Let a flame sprout, and make it spin.”
A ball of fire the size of a hen’s egg swirled on her palm, warm to her skin but not scalding. As she gazed at it, a new thought seeped in. Might fire help her see more deeply into the memory stone? It was probably worth a try.
She extinguished the flame, withdrew the stone from the pouch, and set the memory-collection side on her palm. “Spinning fire, return to my hand.”
The flame reignited and swirled once again, this time flattened by the stone. Tongues darted out around the edges as if licking the surface.
Sabina peered deeply into the gem. Instead of a flight path, a face seemed to take shape—feminine,
maybe a young woman or a girl with flowing hair. Color seeped in, as if an invisible brush painted peach-tone hues into her skin, dazzling white into each strand of hair, and brilliant blue sparkles into her eyes—bright and nearly blinding.
The girl appeared to be a teenager, nearly flawless in appearance, the most beautiful girl Sabina had ever seen. With hair as white as snow, might she be one of the underborn?
Sabina whispered, “Hello. Can you hear me?”
The girl’s stare locked on hers, her expression kind, though her eyes seemed to pierce like knives. “Yes.
Who are you?”
“My name is Sabina. I am a girl who lives in Camelot. Who are you?”
“Sapphira Adi. I am what some call an underborn and others call an Oracle of Fire.”
