Duets

No one gets me at all, except for Hester. And she’s not even real. She’s a woman from the 1800s, but she totally understands what it’s like to hide love. So, she’d understand why hiding text messages is super important. But, since my dad became a Christian and all, I have to be super careful. But my parents are hiding things too, like why my mom is riding the struggle bus while she’s expecting my baby brother or why dad is talking to the other woman at the office.

My YA Review

Saez, Jordan. Duets. 2025

Jordan Saez is a new-to-me author. The book is written from dual perspectives – a 15-year-old daughter and a pregnant mom. The chapter titles give the name of the person speaking in that chapter.

Candy is homeschooled. Leslie has a difficult pregnancy; we don’t find out why it is difficult until near the end of the story. Saez did an excellent job with each of these perspectives. Candy and Leslie have some of the same struggles as most moms and teen girls have.

Duets is a novella with a lot packed into it. There are several plot lines. Leslie’s husband, Rob, was raised in a homeless community, so Leslie and Rob have a heart for the homeless. They run a business that builds homes. Candy is homeschooled and spends her time in her “classroom” in her parents’ office complex – her parents believe in keeping their children close. A handsome young intern comes to work, and Candy has a secret relationship with Alex (which, spoiler alert, goes south). Then there is the problematic pregnancy and Candy feeling like there are things her parents aren’t telling her (and there are).

Duets is a novella that is said to serve as a prequel for the Honeybrook High series. I look forward to reading more books in this series.

If Duets is any indication, the Honeybrook High series would be a great addition to a K-12 Christian school library. It is just what some teen girls are looking for.

I received a complimentary copy of Duets. This is my honest review.
