My YA Review

The Fae Dynasty book 2

Lethal Kings was definitely an “I can’t put this down” kind of book for me. Victoria McCombs created memorable characters, setting and plot in book one. I had no problem jumping into book two even though it has been awhile since reading the first book.

The underlying theme of the duology is why must the mortal queens die and can anything be done to stop this curse.

Lethal Kings is well-written. McCombs includes some surprises – ones the reader may guess about and others they don’t see coming. The book ended in a way that felt very satisfying.

McCombs does indicate at the end that this was a duology and there won’t be another book. But I would love to see another duology as a spin off. The characters are ones readers can care about and since the Fae are immortal they do have more life to live than where the book ends.

Mortal Queens and Lethal Kings would make great additions to the young adult fantasy section of a K-12 Christian school library. They are appropriate for middle and high school.

She survives on hazelnut coffee, 20-minute naps, and a healthy fear of her deadlines, all while raising four wildlings with her husband in Omaha, Nebraska.

This book came differently to me than my other ones.

It was less plot and structure, and more—what kind of book do I want to write?

I wanted riddles for them to solve, which created the Gamemaster character. I wanted a healthy family aspect, which began the process of repairing the relationships I’d burned in book one. And I wanted a character who knew exactly what she wanted and never waivered from that. Other scenes came from these wishes, like the chess game where the players are the chess pieces, and the War of Hearts played in the labyrinth.

Together, I think it blended nicely, and I can’t wait for readers to get ahold of it!
