Author Interview – Danielle Grandinetti

When did you first know you wanted to be an author?

I have loved stories all my life, but in third grade, I wrote my first short story. I fell in love with writing and haven’t stopped telling stories since.

When you are not writing, what other hats do you wear? What do you do for fun?

Two years ago, after two decades in education, I hung up my teacher hat to focus on being a stay-at-home author, wife, and mom. My husband and I have two sweet little boys who are going into kindergarten and 3K this fall. When I’m not busy being a boy mom, I also love to tinker in my vegetable and herb garden. For fun, I take nature photos, especially of Lake Michigan, which is just around the corner from my house.

What is your favorite genre to read? What about that genre draws you?

My favorite genre to read is historical romance. I love learning, especially about history. And romance is my favorite genre of all. There’s nothing like a happily ever after.

What is your favorite thing about this time of year?

Summer is my least favorite season. Even in Wisconsin, it’s too hot for me. But I love the promise of autumn and harvest. Summer storms in the Midwest are awe-inspiring, too, though they can also be destructive…

What historical figure do you admire and why?

I’m a big fan of women who defied convention for their day. Like Susan B. Anthony or Amelia Earhart. There are too many to list, but I love learning about them.

Who did you have in mind as you wrote the book?

I can’t say I had anyone in particular in mind as I wrote A Father for Her Boys, but Sofia’s broken foot is taken directly from my own life. I’ve injured my ankle many times in my life, once requiring a boot. But the instance I drew from most was when I sprained my ankle as a mom of two littles. Trying to keep up with two rambunctious boys when I couldn’t walk on one foot was … difficult, to say the least

How does your faith play out in your writing?

One reason I love happily-ever-afters is because I believe God is my happily ever after. The hope that brings, no matter the trials and hardships we face, can buoy the spirit. My prayer is for that message to seep into the hearts of my readers.

As a former K-12 school librarian I have to ask – what is your favorite children’s book?

My favorite series growing up was The Adventures in the Northwoods by Lois Walfrid Johnson. I reread those books more times than I can count.

What advice would you give to a child or teen who wants to be a writer?

Read in the genre you want to write in, and then keep writing!

Thank you so much for joining me today. It is always a joy to “speak” with authors on this blog.
