I have learned over time to embrace the Sunshine-ness that is my name. Yes, I may not always be joyful or exuberant all the time, but I have learned that if I rely on my friends, my family, and my faith, I can conquer each day head-on and live every moment with an expectation of goodness.

And that’s what I wanted to share in this book, Be The Sunshine. It’s not a book about how to be happy or seven ways to stay positive. These pages are about being yourself, showing the world your true colors, and being mindful of the moment. These chapters contain personal stories so that we all can experience love and joy for ourselves as well as shining that light on those around us!

So, just follow my voice. When it comes to being the sunshine, well, I know the way!

Author Interview with Sunshine Rodgers

When did you first know you wanted to be an author?  

In Miss Bond’s class in first grade of Shady Grove Elementary, our assignment was to write and illustrate a book. Mine was titled “The Bear Who Lost His House.” I wrote about how the bear made friends who helped him find his way home. When I was 9 years old, I started writing in a diary and fast forward 28 years later, and I still write in a journal.
I remember back in college, I started writing creative adventures about Angels, God, Satan and demons (the characters I currently use in my Fiction novels!).  English was always my favorite subject; it just came naturally for me. 
Writing a book was always on my bucket list and ever since I held my first book in my hands back in 2015, I knew I had found my life’s calling.

What is your favorite holiday? And why?

Valentine’s Day! I love… LOVE! I got married to my husband on Valentine’s day at Walt Disney World. I watch The Countdown to Valentine’s Day Hallmark Channel Movies. I eat all the chocolates and candy hearts. I decorate the house with red and pink and silver décor. To this day, I still mail cut-out valentine’s to my friends and family. 

What research did you do for this book?

I had such a great time researching scripture to use for my Nonfiction book, Be The Sunshine! 87 Bible verses representing 9 different translations (NLT, MSG, NIV, NKJ, AMP, ESV, CSB, NRSV, and GW) were used for clarity, easy- to-understand passages and relatable terminology.

I also interviewed Christian Leaders and Mentors (Ileana Reyes, Steven Stein, Ashalee Bingham, Tim Stromer, Marcia Baker, and Jeff Hosfeld) who were all so amazing for sharing their testimony and personal stories to this piece. 

If readers have just one take-away from this book, what do you want it to be?

Be The Sunshine is a call to action! We want to make a positive difference in our families, our community, and out in our world! At the end of the book, I write: “Tell me how you blessed someone today and use the Hashtag: #BeTheSunshine. Make sure to tag me and I may repost it on my site!” I want my readers to spread the love and get involved….one act of kindness at a time!

As a former K-12 school librarian I have to ask – what is your favorite children’s book?

My favorite book series as a kid was Animorphs by K.A. Applegate. I absolutely loved reading about the alien invasion  (the Yeerks!) and this ragtag team sent to stop them by using  supernatural morphing abilities. Did you know that Nickelodeon had a TV show “Animorphs”? I was all excited to watch that! Aside from Animorphs, I read a lot of Goosebumps by R.L. Stine. To this day, I will stay out of the basement, won’t go near a cemetery at midnight, will not buy a dummy doll and I won’t try on any creepy masks in case it gets stuck and takes over my body!
