My Kid Review
DaVeiga, Cheryl. The Dolphin Dentist. Illustrated by Luis Peres. Tucson, AZ: Waterhole Productions, 2023.
The Dolphin Dentist is an interesting story. If the goal of Cheryl DeVeiga was to provide parents with a book that encourages less fear of the dentist, I’m not sure that is accomplished with the story. The book starts with some scary illustrations and a dentist who is actually mean to his patient. It does end with more friendly illustrations and the dentist becoming more gentle toward his patient, but I can see young kids not wanting to finish the story because of the scariness at the beginning. On the other hand some children may find the story hilarious and it may achieve the goal. Parents will need to be aware of their child’s personality and whether or not they scare easily.
Luis Peres uses a cartoon-like style for the illustrations in The Dolphin Dentist. The illustrations do complement the story.
Some may be bothered by the use of the word holy as an expletive twice in the text. Because of this I cannot recommend The Dolphin Dentist for inclusion in a K-12 Christian school library.
I did receive a complimentary copy of The Dolphin Dentist. This is my honest review.
