Summary

Don’t miss the fanciful, captivating illustrations in IVP Kids’ latest picture book, The Unwinding Path: A Soothing Stroll to SlumberI would be happy to send you a hard copy or PDF for review consideration.

What sets this children’s picture book apart from other bedtime stories?

  • Not just a bedtime story, but a bedtime practice.
  • Captivating, dreamy illustrations with paths for young readers to trace with their finger.
  • A sensory journey through the practice of walking a labyrinth—an ancient form of prayer and meditation.
  • As children trace the labyrinth’s path with their fingers, they are invited to slow down, breathe deeply, and notice God’s presence in the world around them.

My Kid Review

Many children (and adults) struggle with falling asleep. Their minds are running wild with thoughts of all they have done during the day and things they want to do tomorrow.

Betoney Coons has created an unwinding experience to help young children settle in to sleep. In the process, it may also help the adult who is reading to the child.

Coons has created the book so that children can follow a path from awake to sleep.

At first, I did not like the dark tones used in the illustrations. They feel dark and foreboding to me, not inviting. Then I realized that Coons is mimicking the darkness of the night outside – a darkness many children are afraid of. The dark coloring may help to normalize the darkness of night for children.

This may become a favorite bedtime book if it helps children calm down and fall asleep.

The Unwinding Path could find its way into the picture book section of a K-12 Christian school library. It is appropriate for young children.

I received a complimentary copy of The Unwinding Path. This is my honest review.
