“Adventurous quests, prophetic stones, and forbidden romance! Who could possibly ask for more?”
—Lindsay A. Franklin, Carol Award–winning author of The Weaver Trilogy

She’s only seventeen—too young to die.

But the wizard, the ambitious king, and their marauding Borags must be stopped. Fulfilling the prophecy is the only way to defeat them, and after scouring Argonia for the missing gemstones, Lyric and her companions are just steps away from the final, crucial battle.

If they fail, the world they love will sink into a dark night of destruction.

If they fail, they will almost certainly die.

But Lyric is a king’s daughter, and long ago she chose this path. Terrified or not, she will see it to its end, because sometimes, sacrifice is the only way forward.

Dark magic, tragic loss, and tender romance abound in this gripping conclusion to the Lost Stones of Argonia trilogy.

My YA Review

Shipman, Dawn. Battle for the Crown. Plymouth, MA: Elk Lake Publishing, 2023.
The Lost Stones of Argonia book 3

It’s not often I read the third book in a series without reading the previous books, it is even less frequent that I understand the plot line from the very beginning when I haven’t read previous books. When I started the book I did not realize that it was the third book in a series, I probably wouldn’t have started it if I had. But I am so glad I did. I thoroughly enjoyed the story. Dawn Shipman wrote Battle for the Crown in such a way that it really could be a stand alone book even though it is the third book in The Lost Stones of Argonia series. I didn’t feel “in the dark” at all while reading the book. There were a couple of times I wondered if there were previous books based on what I suspected were references to things that had happened prior to this book, but I never really felt like I was missing crucial information.

Battle for the Crown is an epic fantasy complete with mythical characters, a quest, a fight between good and evil, and even a romance. The characters and the fantasy world are believable and consistent throughout the story.

The story has a very satisfying ending and while there are things I always wonder about as far as the future of the characters goes as the end of a book, I felt the story ended well with all the loose ends tied up.

Battle for the Crown, and I assume the whole Lost Stones of Argonia series, would be a great addition to the fantasy section of a k-12 Christian school library. It is appropriate for middle school and up.

I received a complimentary copy of Battle for the Crown. This is my honest review.

Dawn Shipman

Dawn Shipman knew she wanted to be a writer since Mrs. Juell’s 10th grade Creative Writing class. Since then, she’s written stories, poetry, plays, puzzles, quizzes, and a mass of magazine articles, including interviews, how-tos, and personal experience stories.
