Book Description:

It’s almost time for Miya’s favorite holiday, the Mid-Autumn Festival. She loves all the holiday traditions: moon gazing, lighting lanterns, and best of all, baking and eating mooncakes! Miya notices that many in her town seem to have lost the holiday spirit lately, including those in her school and in her family. Miya has an idea to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival in a more meaningful manner this year. It will involve some extra special mooncakes and the entire neighborhood. Can Miya pull it off in time for the festival?

This is a story of ingenuity, empathy, creating new traditions while honoring old ones. It’s also an ode to neighbors, immigrants, and all those that make up a community!

My Kid Review

Lee, Crystal Z. Miya’s Mooncakes. Illustrated by Allie Su. London: Balestier Press, 2026.

If you are looking for a book to help explore different cultures, Miya’s Mooncakes just might be it. Lee has traveled extensively and visited many cultures. I love that she shares her knowledge through picture books.

Miya’s Mooncakes explores the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival (something I knew nothing about). Lovable Miya has a heart for others. She wants to share her culture with her neighbors (who come from a wide variety of cultures different from hers). In doing so, she brings the neighborhood together in a way that only an outgoing little girl can. Lee has written a delightful story in Miya’s Mooncakes.

Su’s illustrations do a great job of showing the different cultures. They help little ones unfamiliar with them get a taste of those cultures.

Miya’s Mooncakes would be a great addition to either the picture book section or the nonfiction holiday section of any K-12 school library.

I received a complimentary copy of Miya’s Mooncakes. This is my honest review.
